The Center for Research with Infants and Toddlers (The New School)

Who Can Participate

For babies aged 5 to 7months old who hear mainly English (over 80% of the time) in their household and reside in the US or CA; each child may participate in this study only once.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Schedule a time to participate” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. In this study, your baby will be presented with a series of pictures of adults wearing traditional clothing from a non-Western society. The pictures will be paired with either a naming phrase or beep tones. Following this, your baby will see pictures of two women, side by side, one from the same non-Western society as the earlier photos, the other from another non-Western society. We are interested in which person your baby looks at longer.

What We're Studying

This study aims to determine if babies categorize people by their style of dress and ornamentation. In answering this question, we hope to learn more about human readiness to seek out information that signals their group identity and use this information to draw inferences about social life.
