Do children expect that other people like surprising objects?

Lab for Child Development (Johns Hopkins University)

Who Can Participate

For 17 to 24 month olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the "Schedule a time to participate" button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the study, your child will sit on a high-chair or on your lap in front of your computer during a 15-minute Zoom call. We will show your child videos of a person reacting to a surprising event, and we are interested in how long your child looks at different outcomes.

What We're Studying

A lot of research has shown that babies love playing with surprising objects and exploring them in fun, curious ways. For this study, we want to see if babies have that expectation of others as well - do they expect others to also want to play with surprising objects? This entails being able to predict what another person decides to do, based on prior events!

Duration

15 minutes

Compensation

Participants who are within the age range will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card within two weeks of completing the study. Each child will receive only one gift card.
