Do You Know What a Zav is?

Child Language & Cognition Lab (Kent State University)

Who Can Participate

Children with no speech or hearing delays/impairments and have not participated in past studies from this lab.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. During the session, your child will play a series of games about words. Games include children hearing words and choosing between two animal speakers, identifying known and unknown objects, and making yes/no judgments about real and fake words.

What We're Studying

Preschool-age children sometimes mistakenly judge that they know the meanings of unfamiliar words. This mistake may have a negative effect on their word learning. The purpose of this study is to examine whether their tendency to make this mistake can be reduced by repeated exposure to sets of words that are both familiar and unfamiliar. We believe that this exposure may increase children’s attention to the types of information that distinguish things they know from things that they do not know.

Duration

20 - 25 minutes

Compensation

Children will receive a $10 Amazon Gift card from Amazon.com for their participation in this study. Children may only participate once. Only children within the age range recruited will be given compensation. Compensation should be received within 2-3 business days of participating.
