Children's Word Learning Strategies

Children's Word Learning Strategies

Language Development Lab (Mount Royal University)

Who Can Participate

For 3- to 5-year-olds

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. You will then receive a Google Meet invitation, an online consent form, and a brief demographic survey by email. In a Google Meet session (≤ 30 minutes) children will be taught basic words in Spanish by use of a picture, a sentence, or a translation into English and then be asked to identify the meaning of those words.

What We're Studying

The study aims to understand what strategies help 3-5-year-old children learn a second language most effectively and the influences on word learning. In this study, we want to know how effective pictures, sentence structures, and translations are for learning words in a second language. We also want to know if children's language backgrounds and characteristics can affect these three word learning strategies. This research might help families and teachers interested in supporting children's second-language learning.
