Social Learning Lab (Stanford University)

Who Can Participate

12-24 month-olds

What Happens

Your child will be introduced to friendly creatures - the wubs - and will watch two videos about them. In the videos, the wubs interact with a toy and with each other, either speaking or sneezing. After watching the videos, your child will be shown two of the wubs; we are curious if children have a preference for looking at one wub over the other!

What We're Studying

As adults, it's often easy for us to reason about what others know. Sometimes this is as easy as listening to what someone says or watching how they behave. However, we can also reason about what others know by observing how they influence others. In this study, children are presented with scenarios where speakers interact with a listener by either speaking gibberish or sneezing towards them. Based on how the listeners act towards a toy afterwards, we're curious if children can reason about whether the speaker themselves was knowledgeable about that toy, and if this leads to them preferring one of the speakers over the other.
