Who Can Participate

For English-Spanish bilingual infants from 16-24 months who live in the United States

What Happens

In this study, your child will be shown two new objects and will hear two labels for each of these objects: each object will have a name in English and another in Spanish. Some children in the study will hear both labels for a new object at the same time, while other children will hear only one label at a time.

What We're Studying

The purpose of this study is to better understand how bilingual children learn object labels in their two languages (English and Spanish) when hearing speech that mixes the two languages. In this study, children will hear made-up labels for objects in English and Spanish that they haven't heard before. Studies with monolingual English-speaking children show that repetition of object labels aids in learning, but there currently are no studies exploring how young bilinguals process repetition across their languages close in time and how this may aid them in learning new words.
