Andy and Suzy's Big Adventures

Andy and Suzy's Big Adventures

Markman Lab (Stanford University)

Who Can Participate

For 6-year-olds

What Happens

In this study, your child will meet Andy and Suzy. Suzy is going to the beach and Andy is fixing a window. Your child will hear short stories read to them about both Andy and Suzy and then answer a couple of questions.

What We're Studying

Do the statements "The ball breaks the window" and "The ball makes the window break" have the same meaning? Many researchers think they mean the same thing. Our research is aimed at testing whether this is the case. If we find that—e.g., “make to break” vs. “break”—do not mean the same thing, then this would be a very important finding and raise a whole host of questions about the very different ways we have for thinking about causation. As one example, if “make to break” and “break” don’t mean the same thing, then that might suggest that there are two different ways to understand causation. And then this would raise questions about how these different understandings of causation develop.
