Learning words from multiple people

16 and 17 month old, English learning infants

This study will take place over Zoom, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you.

During the Zoom call, your child will sit on your lap and be shown images on the screen while hearing sounds and words that go along with them. We will play these for them as long as they are interested in them, and stop when they are no longer interested! We'll record how long they want to listen to different types of images and sounds!

You will also be asked to fill out a couple of questionnaires, that can take 15-20 minutes total, which will be emailed to you before your scheduled time.

We want to learn more about how infants learn words from multiple people. In the real world, infants hear language from a lot of different people around them, so it's important for us to understand how this influences word learning! This study builds on recent research showing that it is easier for 14 month olds to learn similar sounding words (bat/pat) when those words are presented by multiple people, but that hearing words from multiple people makes learning different sounding words (bear/doll) hard. We will ask how infants who are a few months older (and have more experience learning words) learn new similar and different sounding words from multiple people.
