USC Language Development Lab (University of Southern California)

Who Can Participate

Primary English Speaking (IMPORTANTLY CHILDS NEED TO HEAR MORE than 80% of ENGLISH) and be typically developing 2-3-year-olds. One participant can not sign up more than once.

What Happens

This study will take place on a video call, live with a researcher! Clicking on the “Participate Now!” button will send you to an online calendar where you can select a date and time that works for you. Your baby watch videos asking them to find another object as the one presented in the video. Your baby then will choose among 4 objects that have different shapes and colors.

What We're Studying

Previous research showed that children can understand the difference between nouns and verbs at a very early age. In this study, we explore children's ability to understand those differences using pronouns . We will present children with videos where a speaker uses phrases that contain different pronouns (such as either having a specific category or not) and observe children's ability to make choices around presented objects (images of colored shapes). Observing children's choices and learning how they perceive presented information in this study will help us better understand the nature and development time of a critical language-related skill - linguistic categorization. This can then tell us more about children's perspectives and understanding of other categories not studied in this research specifically (for example, understanding the difference between nouns and verbs). Moreover, this can also help us learn more about word learning.
